The bilberry is a perennial shrub native to northern Europe, the northern United States and Canada. Known as the "European blueberry", the purple-black bilberry fruit resembles the "American blueberry" and can easily be confused. Some studies have found that bilberries contain anthocyanin glycosides, a more valuable active ingredient than blueberries, and are therefore widely used to improve vision and night blindness, whereas blueberries are only used as an ingredient in jams and food additives.

bilberry extract protects vision, prevents blindness, glaucoma, cataracts and retinal hemorrhages, improves myopia, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, and night blindness.

The difference between bilberry and blueberry

bilberries and blueberries are two different species of plants in the same genus. There are four main differences between the two.

1. Blueberry is an artificial hybrid, while the European bilberry is a wild variety.

2 .Blueberries can be picked by machine, while European bilberries can only be picked by hand.

3. Blueberry fruit is larger and the flesh is yellow-green, while European bilberry is smaller and the flesh is dark blue-purple.

4. The anthocyanin content of the bilberry fruit is about four times that of the blueberry fruit.

Anthocyanins are powerful antioxidants (about 50 times stronger than vitamin E), maintain normal cellular connections, stabilize blood vessels, enhance microvascular circulation, and improve microvascular and venous flow. The bilberry is a natural plant rich in "anthocyanins", with more than 15 types of anthocyanins found in the ripe purple and black berries. Notably, the anthocyanin content of bilberries can effectively inhibit enzymes that destroy eye cells, which explains the benefits of bilberries for eye health.

Anthocyanidin glycosides have been shown to be useful in many clinical studies in the treatment of circulatory disorders, varicose veins, arterial or venous disease. Anthocyanins have also been used in Europe to strengthen the microvascular system, improve gliosis, improve brain function, and antioxidants in vivo, and they also seem to have a special affinity for the kidneys, helping to strengthen the microvascular system (the filtration system part of the kidney) within the more fragile glomeruli.
