The history of rim locks

Rim locks have been found as far back as the medieval period. In later centuries, especially during the Renaissance, these locks became a design feature and were beautifully decorated. Today's locks are based on Victorian designs and feature black or brass-rimmed lock boxes.

How rim locks work

The mechanism of the basic rim lock is not difficult to understand. For a locked door (where the rim lock is engaged), a simple bolt extends from the side of the door to hold it in place. This bolt enters a fixing slot in the door frame and that's it, the door is locked. To open a locked door, you need a key. Almost all rim locks have a cylindrical locking mechanism.

A quick turn of the key causes a cylinder attached to a piece of metal called a cam to rotate. The cam then moves the stopper, causing the latch to slide to release the lock. Another useful aspect of rim locks is that they are perfect for anyone who has one handy at home. That said, if you don't fancy DIY, get a professional to fit the lock for you.

The rim band lock has a simple latch that requires a handle or thumb turn to retract it. This is usually part of the locking kit. Rim deadlocks have a single bolt and do not require a handle. Most rim locks come with a set of door handles which are usually included as part of the rim kit. One of the door handles has a support rose on it which is located on the non-locking side of the door.

Where to use rim locks?

They are mainly used on the internal doors of your property. Rim locks add privacy and a little security to the internal doors of the rooms you need them for. Security experts do not recommend using rim locks on external doors that can accommodate stronger locks.

When to use rim locks?

Use rim locks on thin exterior doors that are not thick enough to accommodate a mortise style lock. As they are weak locks - from a burglar's point of view - you want to add extra security to reinforce the entrance door. If they suit your tastes and complement the interior design, also consider using rim locks as part of the door furniture.

Who should use rim locks?

Anyone who wants to add a little extra security and privacy to their home should consider installing rim locks on doors that do not have any locks. They are particularly good for people who share accommodation or live in a residence of some description.
