What does DC mean/stand for?

"DC" stands for "direct current", which is essentially a charge movement that provides a constant voltage (or current) flowing in only one direction.

A simple way to think of a DC-powered battery is as a water feeder for a pet rabbit or hamster. You fill the feeder with water and over time, the feeder slowly begins to empty as the water is pushed (or pulled) out in one direction. Once the feeder is empty, there is no longer any water to pass through.

DC power products work similarly to this concept - once the power in the battery is depleted, it can no longer be powered. However, until the battery is dead, it will provide a constant voltage in a uniform direction.

Interesting fact: A typical AA battery provides about 1.5 volts of DC power.

How does DC power work?

Most outlets you find in homes and businesses are connected to AC power (alternating current), but in many cases, that power is converted to DC power. For DC power products, DC power can be generated in a variety of ways.

Your typical battery is powered by a DC power source, which is generated by a chemical reaction that occurs inside the battery. DC power can also be generated and converted from AC power through a commutator, a device in an alternator. Rectifiers, transformers or filters can also be used to convert AC power to DC power.

DC Power Applications

DC power has many uses and applications. Most of the electronic devices we use require DC powered batteries that can be connected or plugged into our outlets with the help of an AC adapter.

The following are some examples of common DC-powered products that we use on a daily basis.

✱ Flashlights

✱ Cell phones

✱ TVs (power is converted from AC to DC)

✱ Automobiles

✱ Solar panels
