The thickness of the hot-dip galvanized alloy layer depends mainly on the silicon content of the steel, the cross-sectional area of the steel, the roughness of the steel surface, the chemical composition such as the temperature of the zinc pot, the galvanizing time, the cooling rate, the amount of cold rolling deformation, etc.

Other uses for galvanized steel coils involve manufacturing environments where thicker coils are used to make smaller parts. The smaller parts are cut and formed from the coils as they are rolled into the press. Galvanized steel coil can also be welded and stitched, so it can be used for different tank fabrication that does not involve corrosive materials.
