So, you're getting ready to tackle a long overdue painting project. You've settled on a color, mixed your paints, and are picking up all the paint supplies you need: drop cloths, paint trays, rollers and frames, and paint brushes.

At this point, you realize that there are a lot of rollers and brushes out there, and their different characteristics are hard to distinguish. Which type of brush is best for my project? Should I use a different brush for chalk paint or interior and exterior paint? What size brush should I use? What type of brush head should I look for and which bristle material is best? What is the difference in bristle size and material for rollers?

Types of Paint Brush Designs

When starting a DIY paint project, the first thing you need to decide is the type of project you are going to do. This is because the type of paint brush you need will depend on the type of work you are doing. It could be as simple as touching up a skirting board, or it could be a complete room repaint. Our simple guide below will show you which type of paint brush you will need to get the job done.

1. Angle sash brush

Ideal for cutting in corners and hard-to-reach areas, giving you that perfect line finish.

2. Masonry brush

Perfect for block work or rough-cast dashing.

3. No-loss brush

Each bristle is wrapped around the block, so no strands come loose and get stuck in the paint.

4. Radiator brush

Great for those hard-to-reach places as it's angled and has a long handle.

Types of paint bristles

1. Synthetic bristles. This is used to achieve fine finishes with water-based paints rather than solvent-based paints. It is a very abrasion resistant bristle that does not absorb large amounts of water - meaning it does not swell and cause track lines to appear in the paint (which also reduces drying time).

2. Natural bristles. This is used for solvent-based paints and can be easily brushed on with little to no brush marks. Can be used on skirting boards, doors and walls. The structure of the natural bristles allows it to absorb and hold the paint within the brush - the split ends help produce a fine finish.

3. Combines synthetic and natural bristles. This blend of synthetic and natural bristles gives you a great finish on a variety of paints.
