Things To Consider When Buying A Bedroom Ceiling Light

All too often, the standard dome light mounted on a bedroom ceiling stays there forever. It's practical, but not great, and some homeowners think it's the best job they can do to illuminate their space.

Layered lights are key, and ceiling lights in bedrooms should be one of those layers.

Providing multiple layers of light creates ambiance, and adding light to the ceiling can create balance. You don't want two headboard lights trying to illuminate the entire room while over-illuminating one end of the headboard. Ceiling lights can make other areas of the room darker and more relaxing.

Semi-recessed ceiling lights are recommended. Upward lighting on the ceiling combined with light coming in through clear or frosted glass or metal creates more interest and reduces the feeling of a spotlight.

Smart Ceiling Light

Things to consider when buying a bedroom ceiling light

Size: Know the size of the bedroom you want to illuminate; larger rooms can accommodate larger fixtures. But more importantly, be aware of your ceiling height. If you're 8 feet tall, a recessed installation may be your best option for maximizing headroom. However, if your ceilings are more than 9 feet or more, a semi-recessed installation will open up your options. Vaulted ceilings or high ceilings? Chandeliers and oversized fixtures can work well.

Style: There are an endless number of fixtures, so knowing your target style will narrow your search. Frosted glass and fabric tones tend to soften the light.

Light output: Always check how many watts and how many bulbs your fixture can accommodate, or if it has integrated LEDs. if you want the main ceiling light to be more stylish than functional, recessed lights or track lights can provide more ambient light. Task lighting on a nightstand, or hanging from the ceiling, is better for reading. Don't forget the dimmer switch on the main fixture to customize light output.

Installation: If there is already a junction box in the ceiling, hanging a new light is simple. If not, you will need an electrician and possibly a permit. Check local codes.

Cost: You can usually get the style you like at a price that fits your budget. But higher-end fixtures often have glass, which can better reduce glare and/or hot spots that can cause eye strain.

Smart home options: If home automation is important to you, keep smart switches and smart light bulbs in mind.

Expert Tip

In children's rooms, materials that can be damaged or tampered with, such as metal cage lights or fabric drum lights, are recommended.

Set the mood by considering smart options such as Satco's Starfish or Philips Hue. These control the bulbs together or separately on your phone or other device.

You don't have to stick with semi-recessed lights in the ceiling. Pendants are great as long as they don't fall too low. If your ceiling is 10 feet high or lower, you can accommodate a larger size if you hang the light above the foot of the bed.

Integrated LED lighting can be great, but it is recommended to use traditional sockets for lighting so you have better control over bulb selection to optimize dimmability.
