Application of Sodium Hydroxide in Chemical Industry

In the chemical industry, sodium hydroxide is used to make sodium metal and electrolyze water. Sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate is used in the production of many inorganic salts, especially in the preparation of some sodium salts (e.g. sodium tetraborate decahydrate, sodium silicate, sodium phosphate, sodium dichromate, sodium sulfite, etc.). Sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate is also used in the synthesis of dyes, drugs and organic intermediates.

 

Application of Sodium Hydroxide in Cleaning

NaOH solution can be used for preparation of various cleaning agents, such as car washing liquid, bottle washing agent, cleanser essence, rust remover and disinfectant. It is mainly used for cleaning of bottles in wine industry, and surface treatment in ceramic and metal industry.

 

Application of Sodium Hydroxide in Water Treatment

Sodium hydroxide is used in the following topics in water treatment: water purification; elimination of the hardness of water; adjustment of the pH value of water; neutralization of the wastewater; removal of heavy metal ions in water by precipitation; and regeneration of ion exchange resin, etc.

In sewage treatment plants, sodium hydroxide can reduce the hardness of water through neutralization reaction. In the industrial field, it is regenerating agent for ion exchange resin regeneration. Application of Sodium Hydroxide in Dyeing and Chemical Fiber Industry

To dye cotton fabrics in the printing and dyeing industry, the covers on the surface of cotton fibers, such as wax, grease, pectin, etc. shall be removed, and the impurities can be removed by soaking and cooking with dilute alkaline solution at an appropriate temperature. In order to make the dye penetrate into the inner layer of the fiber during dyeing, the dye should be expanded and softened before dyeing. Short-time treatment with concentrated caustic soda solution can make the fiber molecules arranged in oriented manner and the mercerizing color of the fabrics can be increased. After the treatment, the fine fibers (velveteen) on the fiber surface can be corroded by caustic soda, the dyeing will be more uniform and there will be no patches of different depths. A large amount of caustic soda is needed in the cotton printing and dyeing industry.

 

Alkali cellulose can be obtained from cellulose after treatment by caustic soda. Then treat the alkali cellulose into cellulose xanthogenate with carbon disulfide, dissolve it in dilute alkali into viscose liquid, then spin and coagulate it to obtain viscose fiber. It is usually called artificial cotton, artificial wool and artificial silk in the market. Production of 1 ton of artificial wool consumes 1 ton of caustic soda.

 

Application of Sodium Hydroxide in Papermaking Industry

Caustic soda plays an important role in the papermaking industry. Because of its strong corrosiveness, it is used in the process of boiling and bleaching paper sheets. At the same time, the raw materials of papermaking are mainly wood or grass. These plants contain cellulose and quite a lot of non-cellulose (lignin, gum, etc.), and the fiber can be chemically treated. Use ferrous sulfate or alkaline solution to steam and boil the raw materials, and according to the characteristics that the dilute alkali cannot react with cellulose but can corrode and dissolve non-cellulose components, produce the pulp with cellulose as the main component. This kind of pulp fiber is long, the tensile force of the paper is strong.
