Basic properties of sulfuryl chloride

Sulfuryl chloride is a colourless, fuming liquid with a strong, irritating odour, which is soluble in benzene and toluene. When hydrolysed, the two chlorine atoms are replaced by hydroxyl groups to produce sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid. Reaction with ammonia results in ammonolysis, with the chlorine atom replaced by an amino group. Sulphuryl chloride decomposes at high temperatures to SO2 and CL2. In contact with water emits toxic hydrogen chloride and sulphide gas. Toxic sulphide and chloride fumes are produced by heat. Store in ventilated, dry and cold rooms. Store separately from alkalis and food additives.

Preparation of sulfuryl chloride

1. Chlorination method reacts dry sulphur dioxide and chlorine gas in the presence of an activated carbon catalyst, the resulting sulphuryl chloride is condensed to produce finished sulphuryl chloride.

2. Sulphuryl chloride can be produced by a direct reaction of sulphur dioxide with chlorine gas using activated carbon or camphor as catalysts.

Application of sulfuryl chloride

1. Mainly used as a chlorinating agent or chlorosulfonating agent, such as chlorination of aromatic compounds, chlorination of carboxylic acids and other kinds of organic and inorganic compounds. Also used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, dyes, surfactants, etc.

2. Used as a pharmaceutical agent, organic chlorinating agent, and for the manufacture of dyestuffs, rubber, etc. It can also be used to treat woolen fabrics

Precautions for sulfuryl chloride

(1) Health hazard: It is a strong irritant to the eyes and mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract, and can cause pulmonary edema in severe cases. Can cause severe skin burns.

(2) Flammability hazard: The product is flammable, highly corrosive and irritating and can cause burns to the human body.

(3) Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing immediately and rinse with plenty of running water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.

(4) Eye contact: Immediately lift eyelids and flush thoroughly with plenty of running water or saline for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.

(5) Inhalation: Remove from the scene to fresh air quickly. Keep the airway open. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If breathing stops, give immediate artificial respiration. Seek medical attention.

(6) Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water and give milk or egg white. Seek medical attention.

Spill and treatment

Emergency treatment: Quickly evacuate people from the contaminated area of the spill to a safe area and immediately isolate 150m and strictly limit access. It is recommended that emergency personnel wear self-contained positive pressure respirators and acid and alkaline resistant work clothes. Enter the site from upwind. Cut off the source of the spill if possible. Prevent flow into restricted spaces such as sewers and flood drains.

Small spill: mix with the sand, dry lime or soda ash.

Large spill: construct a berm or dig a pit to contain it. Remove under expert guidance.

Disposal and storage

Handling precautions: operate airtightly and pay attention to ventilation. The operation should be mechanised and automated as far as possible. Operators must be specially trained and follow strict operating procedures. It is recommended that the operator wears a self-absorbing filtering gas mask (full face mask), rubber acid and alkali resistant clothing and rubber acid and alkali resistant gloves. Keep away from fire and heat sources and smoking is strictly prohibited in the workplace. Avoid generating fumes. Prevent the release of fumes and vapours into the workplace air. Avoid contact with acids, alkalis, alcohols and reactive metal powders. Take particular care to avoid contact with water. Handle lightly and prevent damage to packaging and containers. Equip with the appropriate variety and quantity of fire-fighting equipment and spill response equipment. Empty containers may contain residues of hazardous substances.

Storage precautions: Store in a cool, dry and well-ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. The temperature should not exceed 25°C and the relative humidity should not exceed 75%. The packaging must be sealed and must not be exposed to moisture. It should be stored separately from acids, alkalis, alcohols, active metal powders, etc. and should not be mixed. The storage area should be equipped with leakage emergency handling equipment and suitable shelter materials.
