The end centering machine is a lathe that can process both ends of the bar at the same time. While it may be called a face centering machine, it can also chamfer, drill, countersink and turn. In most cases, facing and centering machines are used to prepare the bar for further machining on the main operating lathe.
Typically, an operator needs to machine one end of a part, remove the part, and automatic CNC machine the other end. Turning time is halved by machining both ends of the bar simultaneously. But beyond that, face centering machines can often completely eliminate post-finishing operations by properly preparing the face of the workpiece prior to turning. The machine's centering operation (creating a precisely positioned hole for further drilling or machining) can also eliminate the need to machine certain portions of the workpiece's outer diameter later.
