China’s Caring Enterprise Takes Charge, Jiayue Donates Supplies to Turkey

A massive earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria in the early hours of February 6 local time, and strong earthquakes of 7.8 and 7.5 magnitude struck near the Gaziantep, Turkey, which has sparked fears of a humanitarian crisis. UN aid agencies are urgently assisting thousands of people afflicted by the disaster, including by providing life-saving assistance to those still buried under the ruins. The Turkish government has issued a Level 4 alert requesting international assistance. “The images we have seen in Syria and Turkey are heartbreaking,” said Russell, UNICEF Executive Director, “the initial earthquake occurred in the early morning hours when many children were asleep and unaware of the quake, leading to more serious consequences, and the aftershocks pose an ongoing risk. Our immediate priority is to ensure that the children and families affected receive the support they so desperately need.” UNICEF noted that schools, hospitals and other health and education facilities could be damaged or destroyed as a result of the earthquake, which would further affect children. Roads and key infrastructure have also been damaged, making search and rescue efforts, as well as the wider humanitarian response, more difficult.
