Removing a ball joint takes preparation. First, park the car on level ground. Use a jack to lift the vehicle and place it on jack stands. Never work under a car without solid support. Wear gloves and safety glasses for protection.
Remove the wheel to access the suspension. Find the lower control arm on car—this arm connects to the steering knuckle via the ball joint. Check for rust or dirt around the joint and clean the area if needed.

Use pliers to take out the cotter pin from the castle nut. Then use a wrench to loosen the nut. Leave the nut slightly threaded to prevent sudden release while breaking the joint loose.
Use a ball joint separator or pickle fork. Position the tool between the joint and the arm. Strike it with a hammer until the joint pops out. Once loose, fully remove the nut and take out the ball joint.
Inspect the lower control arm on car for wear or cracks. If damaged, replace it. Clean all contact points before installing a new ball joint. Never reuse old or damaged hardware.
