Water treatment calcium hypochlorite is usually found as a white powder, granules or tablets. It decomposes readily in water or when heated, releasing oxygen and chlorine gas. It has a strong chlorine odor, but this odor may not be enough to alert people to dangerous concentrations. Calcium hypochlorite is not flammable, but it can oxidize with combustible materials and may react explosively with ammonia, amines or organic sulfides. Calcium hypochlorite should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated area, below 120ºF (50ºC), away from acids, ammonia, amines and other chlorinating or oxidizing agents.
