What Should Be Considered when Installing Diesel Generator?

Diesel generator sets are critical emergency backup power sources. The installation location directly impacts generator performance and safety. When installing a diesel generator, please adhere to the following six key points:

1. Ventilation is the top priority. 

Proper ventilation is crucial for diesel generator sets. During operation, the genset generates a significant amount of heat. If ventilation is poor, it can lead to excessively high temperatures, which will affect the generator’s performance and reliability. The installation site should have good natural ventilation conditions or be equipped with suitable ventilation facilities to ensure that fresh air can easily enter the unit and hot air is exhausted in a timely manner.

Air intake: Located at the generator/alternator end to ensure sufficient fresh air supply.

Air outlet: Positioned at the radiator end, with an effective area not less than 1.5 times the radiator area, to ensure smooth exhaust of hot air.

2. Environment must be clean and dry. 

The installation site of diesel generating sets should be clean and dry. Keep away from flammable and explosive materials and corrosive substances, such as gasoline, alcohol, acids, alkalis, etc. These substances may cause safety accidents such as fires or explosions, or cause corrosive damage to the diesel generator set.

In addition, the installation site should be equipped with necessary firefighting facilities, such as fire extinguishers and fire hydrants, to respond to possible fire incidents. These firefighting facilities should undergo regular inspection and maintenance to ensure they are in good working condition.

3. Scientific installation of exhaust pipe.

Ensure power and prevent backflow.

Pipe diameter: Not smaller than muffler outlet.

Path design: Minimize bends (≤3 preferred). Slope outward 5-10° to reduce backpressure and prevent water ingress. Add rain cap if vertical upward.

4. Foundation must be solid and level.

The installation site's ground must be firm, level, and capable of supporting the weight of the diesel generator set. If the ground is uneven, it may cause vibration during operation, affecting the unit's stability and service life.

The dimensions of the foundation should be determined based on the model and size of the diesel generator set. It is generally recommended that the foundation extend a certain distance beyond the unit’s base to ensure a secure installation. The foundation must have sufficient strength to bear the weight of the unit and withstand operational vibrations, with a concrete foundation typically being used. During construction, reinforcement arrangement and concrete pouring should be carried out in accordance with the design specifications to guarantee the quality of the foundation.

The installation position and dimensions of the anchor bolts must be accurate, and their length should be determined according to the requirements of the generator set. The anchor bolts must be securely fixed in the foundation to prevent any displacement of the unit during operation. During installation, tools such as a spirit level should be used to calibrate the anchor bolts, ensuring that their vertical and horizontal alignment meets the required standards.

5. Grounding and lightning protection.

Diesel generator sets must be equipped with reliable grounding protection to prevent electric shock hazards caused by leakage currents from electrical equipment. The grounding resistance should comply with relevant standards and generally should not exceed 4 ohms. If required, have a professional electrician perform direct grounding. Install lightning protection in high-risk areas.

6. Power transfer switch.

The transfer switch must be reliable to prevent backfeed into the public grid. After installation, its reliability must be inspected and approved by the local power supply department.
