The single most important component of a cooling tower is the fill. Cooling tower fill is used to increase contact surface as well as contact time between air and water, to provide better heat transfer. The efficiency of the cooling tower depends on the current condition of the fill. Holes through the fill are signs of broken or missing nozzles, or cracked and separated lateral piping.
