When comparing metallized and non-metallized BOPP films, the core difference lies in performance: metallized films deliver exceptional moisture and oxygen barriers through a microscopically thin aluminum coating, while non-metallized films—whether standard or coated—offer a more balanced set of properties, often with the advantage of transparency and a different sustainability profile.

Moisture Barrier

Metallized BOPP film provides an excellent moisture barrier. Its water vapor transmission rate can be as low as 0.043 g/m²/day, and typically ranges from 0.2 to 0.5 g/m²/day. This makes it a top choice for products that are highly sensitive to humidity.

Non-metallized BOPP offers a moisture barrier that ranges from moderate to very good, depending on the specific coating applied. Standard BOPP film provides only a moderate barrier, but transparent coatings like AlOx or SiOx can achieve values of 0.25 to 0.69 g/m²/day, bringing them much closer to metallized performance.

Oxygen Barrier

Metallized BOPP film delivers a very good to excellent oxygen barrier. Advanced versions can reach exceptionally low oxygen transmission rates of 0.071 cc/m²/day, offering strong protection against oxidation.

Non-metallized BOPP shows a wider range of performance. Standard film has a poor oxygen barrier, but advanced transparent coatings can achieve rates as low as 0.2 cc/m²/day, rivaling metallized versions in some cases.

Light Barrier

This is where the difference is most stark. Metallized BOPP film provides an excellent light barrier. The opaque, metallic layer completely blocks visible and UV light, which is essential for protecting light-sensitive products from degradation or rancidity.

Non-metallized BOPP offers no light barrier at all. The film is fully transparent, meaning the product is fully exposed to light. This can be a disadvantage for sensitive products but is a clear advantage when product visibility is a marketing priority.

Aroma and Mineral Oil Barrier

Metallized film generally does not emphasize aroma or mineral oil barrier as a key feature. Its performance in this area is not a primary selling point.

Non-metallized BOPP can be a key advantage in this area. Some clear coatings are specifically designed to provide an effective barrier against mineral oil migration and to lock in aroma, making them an excellent choice for products like coffee, spices, and flavored snacks.

Sustainability Profile

Both types can support mono-material polypropylene recycling, but the profile differs. Metallized film enables mono-material PP recycling, but the thin metal layer can complicate some recycling streams, as the infrastructure for separating plastic and metal is not yet universal.

Non-metallized BOPP is generally seen as having a more straightforward sustainability profile. Transparent coatings like AlOx and SiOx are applied in extremely thin layers, making them highly compatible with existing recycling systems. The absence of a macroscopic metal layer also simplifies the recycling process.

In short, metallized BOPP holds the crown for absolute barrier performance, excelling in moisture, oxygen, and light protection, making it ideal for snacks, coffee, and confectionery. However, transparent barrier films are rapidly catching up, offering comparable oxygen and moisture barriers in some cases, with the added benefits of product visibility and a simpler recyclability profile, making them a strong choice for baked goods, dried fruits, and cheese.
