Selecting the right PET release liner thickness is a balancing act that directly impacts your production efficiency, label quality, and cost. There isn't a single "best" thickness; the ideal choice depends on your specific application, the type of label, and your converting process.

The Most Common Thickness Range

For most standard label applications, PET release liners are available in a wide range, typically from about 12 to 200 microns (µm) . However, the most commonly used thicknesses for general-purpose self-adhesive labels are 23, 30, 36, and 50 microns .

Key Factors in Your Decision

When deciding on the optimal thickness for your labels, consider the following principles:

Thinner Liners (e.g., 23–36 µm) are often chosen for cost savings and sustainability. Because they use less material, they are generally more economical and reduce waste. However, they are more delicate. They require extremely precise tooling and a well-maintained converting line because they offer less rigidity and are more sensitive to variations in die-cutting pressure .

Thicker Liners (e.g., 50–125 µm) provide superior stability and durability. A thicker PET liner offers exceptional dimensional stability, which is crucial for high-speed, precision die-cutting and ensures the liner won't stretch or deform under the stresses of the converting process . This makes them the preferred choice for complex label shapes, demanding applications like automotive or electronics, or when using automated labeling equipment where a stiffer liner is needed for reliable dispensing .

The adhesive type and its required release force also play a role. Thicker liners are often paired with "tighter" release forces (peel force of 70-130 grams/2") for stronger adhesives, while thinner liners may use "easy" release forces (5-25 grams/2") for lighter adhesives . This is because the liner must be stiff enough to support the label during the application process.

Additional Considerations

Beyond the core thickness decision, a few other factors are worth keeping in mind:

Your PSA Type: The release performance of a liner is specific to the pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) it's paired with. Always confirm your chosen liner is compatible with acrylic, rubber, or silicone PSAs .

Buyer's Checklist: To guide your selection, you can define your PSA type, target release force, specify the gauge (thickness), and identify your end-use application .

In short, choose a thinner liner to reduce material costs and waste when your label design and converting equipment can handle the lower stiffness. Choose a thicker liner to ensure maximum dimensional stability, reliable high-speed die-cutting, and robust performance for demanding applications or complex label shapes.
