The Importance of Adding HPMC to Tile Adhesive

HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) is a crucial functional additive in cement-based tile adhesives, directly affecting water retention, open time, anti-slip performance, workability, and rheology. Its core function is water retention: after hydration, HPMC molecular chains form a three-dimensional gel network that locks free water inside the slurry, reducing water loss to the substrate and maintaining sufficient moisture for cement hydration. This supports tensile bond strength—C1 requires ≥0.5 N/mm² and C2 requires ≥1.0 N/mm² under EN 12004.

HPMC also extends open time (≥20 minutes for standard, ≥30 minutes for E-grade), improves anti-slip performance (≤0.5 mm displacement within 20 minutes for T-grade under EN 1308), and enhances workability by lubricating cement particles and aggregates.

The effect of HPMC varies by formulation. In C0 tile adhesives without RDP, HPMC mainly provides water retention and workability. In C1/C2 systems with RDP, it works synergistically to improve cohesion and bonding. In high-performance C1TE/C2TES1 systems, HPMC helps extend open time, improve anti-slip, and maintain moisture supply to RDP for flexibility.

When selecting HPMC, consider viscosity grade, particle size, solubility, surface treatment, and dosage. Higher viscosity or higher dosage does not automatically mean better performance—excessive HPMC may increase viscosity and porosity, reducing tensile bond strength. Reference formulas for C0, C1, C2, C1TE, and C2TES1 are provided for formulation testing.
