In label manufacturing, a PET release liner serves as the temporary backing for pressure-sensitive labels. Its core purpose is to protect the adhesive until the moment of application, then release cleanly, allowing the label to be applied smoothly and without residue.

A PET release liner is not a single material but a carefully engineered two-layer composite that works together. The first layer is the substrate, which is made of polyethylene terephthalate, or PET. This provides the structural backbone of the liner. This strong, durable plastic film is chosen for its exceptional dimensional stability, high tensile strength, and resistance to moisture and temperature fluctuations. The second layer is the release coating, typically made of silicone or non-silicone alternatives. This is applied as a microscopically thin layer on one or both sides of the PET film. This coating has a very low surface energy, which is what prevents the label's adhesive from permanently bonding to the liner.

Compared to traditional paper liners, PET offers several critical advantages for high-end or demanding label applications. One key advantage is its smooth release surface. Unlike the rough, fibrous surface of paper, PET has an extremely smooth surface. This is crucial for transparent labels, as it prevents the rough topography of the backing from being transferred to the adhesive, which could otherwise cloud the label's clarity. Another advantage is its superior physical properties. PET offers dimensional stability, tear resistance, and stiffness even in thin gauges, making it highly reliable during high-speed automated application processes. PET also provides an excellent moisture and chemical barrier because it is inert, meaning it doesn't absorb moisture and resists many chemicals. This makes it suitable for labels in demanding environments, such as pharmaceuticals, automotive, or products that may be exposed to moisture.

Beyond standard silicone coatings, manufacturers also offer non-silicone release liners. This type avoids the risk of silicone contamination, which is particularly important in electronics applications where silicone residue can interfere with subsequent manufacturing processes.
